Nurses often witness some of the most traumatic events unfold right before their eyes. Imagine being given a two minute warning about a horrific motorcycle accident victim is due to arrive. Your patient comes in with a weak pulse and open femur fracture. Along with the rest of the ED team you stabilize the patient just enough to get him to the OR. You'll take care of many more patients just like this throughout the week. Some of your patients will be small, elderly, struggling mentally, or pregnant with a child; each one experiencing what may be their most vulnerable time in life. constantly baring witness to such experiences can affect one's mental health over time. There is also the long hours, abuse suffered and so much more that can contribute to nurses feeling burnt out. So how ado we decompress?

Tip #1 - Travel Breaks

Everyone knows nurses love to travel. And it does not have to be to other countries or across country every time either. Local travel can be beneficial too. Taking a short (or long) break away from the daily struggles of nursing can help relieve a lot of our work related stress.

Tip #2 - Exercise

Please do not underestimate the power of a good workout routine. We've all taken a physiology class, so it is no surprise that exercise releases much needed endorphins.

Tip #3 - Start a New Hobby

Starting new hobbies or learning a new skill is always a great way to unwind. Choose something fun and interesting that is not job related. This helps put your focus on something completely unrelated to nursing.

Tip #4 - Spend time outdoors

Spend some time with nature! Getting outside and soaking up some sun is known to improve our mood.

Tip #5 - Spend time with friends and family

Prioritize those date nights with a spouse, friend or family member. It is so important to continue cultivating our relationships with those around us.

Don't forget, you are your first priority in life.
